Kew Gardens 2019

As a part of my natural packaging assignment, I recently took a trip to Kew Gardens to collect a range of pictures that I could use within my work as inspiration and secondary research. This was my first time to Kew Gardens but I was pleasantly surprised but the range of different plants they have around the garden. I was also able to take photographs of Dale Chihuly's amazing glass sculptures which were dotted around. The photos that I collected over the course of the day I am really pleased with so I wanted to share some of them on here, and obviously, I manage to sneak in a few shameless photos of me and my friends!

Dale Chihuly's work captures colorful and mesmerizing glasswork that is set within nature to allow it to stand out more. He uses the outdoor environment as a gallery space that combines the idea of natural and manmade objects to create an "exaggerated celebration of what is found in nature".

For me, this was really inspiring as in a lot of my current work I play it very safe when it comes to the colors I use. However from looking at Chihuly's work I have started to experiment more with using the bolder colors, but also creating a sense of juxtaposition in my work to see what effect or message I could create.

This was one of my favorite pieces of his. Its composition is really interesting and the depth of the artwork encompasses you and makes you look deeply into the details of each glass piece. Each section is different and there is a range of textures and shades. Together, however, it works well and collectively as a piece, it stands out due to its originality.

The Hive is a 17-meter tall contemporary piece of artwork that creates a similar structure of a beehive! It was created by Wolfgang Buttress and it serves as a visual tribute to Britain's honey bees. Being surrounded by wildflowers it creates an extraordinary view and takes the spot of being the most photographed piece in Kew Gardens. Its aluminum mesh frame is created from 170,000 aluminum parts and took 4 months to construct. If I'm being honest the pictures that I took do not do this structure justice, likewise, words cannot describe how amazing it looks in person!

As I said this was my first time visiting Kew Gardens however I left feeling as if I had gained a lot of inspiration which I later added into my coursework. You know it been a successful trip when you've taken 738 photos off what feels like every type of leaf there is on the planet.

So, Christmas at Kew anyone ??
