Final Outcome - Task 4
To begin the process of creating these designs I had to come up with a
name for the magazine. previously I was torn between two names which had very
different styles. "The Bolder, The Better" and "Day
Dreamer". One was a classic style magazine that you would find in the shops
currently and the other being something new and different. I wanted to push
myself in this assignment, so I chose to pursue the idea of "the bolder,
the better". This was because I felt I could experiment with wilder
designs and create visually interesting outcomes and I had a lot more freedom
to create bold effects. It also pushed me out of my comfort zone. Embodying
this bold and edgy fashion magazine designer forced me to think outside the box
more and push the boundaries that the repetitive magazines have set up
today.
doing my research before each task allowed me to identify the key
feature and structure of a magazine. when I read my fashion magazines I never
usually pay attention to the order of things or the front that they use, but to
look at that detail way useful and helped rule out a number of things at the
start. this meant I could be more time efficient as I knew what I wanted to
produce and could stick to the guideline I had produced. I quickly established
that it was bold colours and motifs that I liked. I love streetwear and
designing it outside of lessons and I wanted to see how I could reflect that in
each of the tasks I was given. the beginning style development took a while to
figure out as I wanted to make sure my ideas were clear and persistent. I think
I have maintained the idea that this is a magazine aimed for a teenager and
young adult target market but also can appeal to both males and females. this
was something that I wanted to try and create as the standard fashion magazines
are aimed at women. I know plenty of males that are interested in fashion and
the latest style, so I wanted to cater to the gap in the market. the gender
idea played a big part in the decisions I made. I can clearly cater to a female
audience as I read and view that on the daily but ignored to keep it open for
both genders, I used the opinions of my viewers on social media.
I have a 50/50 split on the gender of my audience and although I can
make a judgment on if I think its gender neutral I can check this through the
popularity and rating of the numerous polls I put on my social media. this was
interesting to see how true my judgment was but also to get honest opinions on
my work. I struggle making final decisions so by using this technique I could
have other judgment to help me decide what to change.
my favourite part of the project was making the layout design. this similar
to the front cover but you have more space to play around with text and images.
I enjoy making the bright and statement layouts and feel as if I put my bold
personality into my final pieces. I do think it’s a reflection of the side of
fashion I enjoy the most and that gets me the most excited. I love looking at
the future of fashion and the cool, high-tech, and edgier style that is present
currently. although I personally don't think I can pull it off its fun to
create content that I am passionate about and personally would look at.
Final Piece
This here is the final front cover that I created. for this cover, I was torn between to styles and black background and white background. the white had introduced a lot more colour, however, the black background followed some of the minimalistic features that I liked in my research. this is the first thing you would see in a magazine, so I understood that you must make a statement. I felt as if the pop of colour and the mixture of the bright red and yellow was most effective. a lot of fashion magazines follow the rules of having either a white border or a lightly coloured background as they found this captures your attention more on a glossy paper. I thought I should base some of my work off what designers already know is effective but push it to become my own style. there are a few changes that I made to the white prototype. the title is MUCH bigger as this needed to stand out as much as it could. I resized the images to give me a white border in areas and I added in more tapes and text. this was to make the theme of the layout design relate to the cover. these are both aspects that I have used inside the magazine and they have made an appearance on the cover to link it all together. I have pushed the traditions but I am happy with the outcome!

This was honestly a fun assignment to complete. for me when I take my fashion course I find myself wanting to focus more and more on the technology side of fashion. Social media marketing is my eventual goal however learning computer skills, adobe software, and creating my blog never feels like a chore. it was fun to push myself and establish a possible online style that I could continue with through my blog and Instagram. I understand now how much effort goes into a fashion magazine and have enjoyed creating my own!
